The Bronx’s Eltona Apartments is an experiment in urban power.
10 eight-foot-tall wind turbines have been mounted on parapets atop the five-story Eltona Apartments building – an experiment in urban wind power that developers hope could become a national model.
The developer and owner, Blue Sea Development, specializes in green buildings and chose a site with a structure strong enough to support wine turbines.
The wind turbine system cost about $100,000 to buy and install. When the wind blows steadily, the turbines can generate enough electricity – about 12 kilowatts – to serve the common-area energy needs of the 63-unit subsidized housing complex.
The building also gets electricity from an on-site natural-gas generator. Through cogeneration – an environmentally friendly strategy for large buildings – the “waste heat” from the natural gas generator warms the building’s water. There is also a community garden on the property and various green design features.
Wind turbines are rare in cities like Tampa because surrounding buildings block the wind, and because of limits placed by zoning, yard space, and infrastructure too weak for roof-mounting. But if buildings are constructed to host wind turbines, as the Eltona was, environmental awareness might be multiplied in the Tampa Bay area.
Building contractors, government agencies, and industrial complexes should follow the successes of the Eltona Apartments. By installing a generator, Tampa buildings will be able to obtain the energy-saving successes of the Eltona Apartments. From this example, users of smart urban power will be educated on additional environmental saving methods, such as cogeneration. Tampa generators can be supplied on demand, with an option to install generators in areas that are being built with wind turbine systems.

Storm season is here. Tropical Storm Bonnie continues her course around the coast of Florida and the summer heat continues to build. Secure your electric with a standby home generator from Generx Generators of Tampa.
Floridians are familiar with the threat of a tropical storm entering the gulf of Mexico. Once in this cauldron of hot water, Bonnie’s strength will build. We can assume that Tropical Storm Bonnie will soon become Hurricane Bonnie, threatening Florida with her growing bands.
However, the threat does not just end with bands. An eastern storm front could push the path of Bonnie into the West coast of Florida. This means the Gulf Coast and Tampa Bay.
When a hurricane strikes, you will lose power. Perhaps for hours, days or weeks. This means discomfort for you and your family. Secure your home and appliances with a standby home generator from Generx.
Remember, the summer does not just mean hurricane season, it also means heat. With the continued use of electricity across the bay area, power outages will ensue. With a continued strain on the electric grid, residential and hospitals are given priority over many businesses. Instead of letting your business dollars go to waste in a forced power outage, power your productivity. Enlist in the industrial generator options of Generx Gernerators and secure your electric and productive output.
You need a Tampa Generator now more than ever.
